The final product, which is the completed work or plant, will be better planned, built and/or assembled, whenever the conceptual, basic and executive projects have been thought of as a single set. Intertechne has been responsible for several contracts in the area of dam safety, with a view to complying with legislation and safety standards, disseminating good practices and keeping them in good operating conditions.

The Dam Safety Plan (PSB) structures the main data and documents of a Hydroelectric Power Plant, standardizing maintenance and inspection procedures and records. Depending on the characteristics of the project, it may also contain the Emergency Action Plan (PAE), which, based on risk analysis and hypothetical studies of dam rupture, specifies the actions to be implemented in cases of anomalies identification and alerts.

Intertechne developed the Dam Safety Plan and the Emergency Action Plan for Tucuruí HPP (one of the largest spillways in the world, according to ICOLD) and for Ilha Solteira and Jupiá HPPs. We also conducted more than sixty safety audits on water supply dams, among other similar contracts, which resulted in the continuous improvement of our expertise in the Dam Safety area. In addition, it is responsible for the Periodic Review of Dam Safety (RPSB) of Serra da Mesa HPP, Furnas HPP, Capim Branco I and II HPPs, Luiz Carlos Barreto de Carvalho HPP, Mascarenhas de Moraes HPP, Corumbá I HPP, Itumbiara HPP, as well as 10 other hydroelectric power plants and 8 multipurpose dams in Brazil. At the moment, Intertechne is finalizing the safety assessment of more than thirty dams under a contract with BRK Ambiental in Brazil, and also 8 other dams under a contract with CODEVASF. Among its clients are companies such as Eletronorte, Furnas, Eletrosul, Vale, Cemig, CODEVASF, CTG, EDP, BRK Ambiental, Votorantim Energia and GERDAU.

Modernization of HPPs
Most of the main HPPs in operation in the world have been in operation for over 30 years. Although a hydroelectric power plant can generate energy indefinitely, in order to keep these plants in operation, operating safely and guaranteeing the necessary energy for society, in addition to regular inspection and maintenance procedures, constant modernization of its equipment is essential. With the aging of equipment, the downtime increases, maintenance becomes more expensive and time-consuming and equipment is discontinued, replaced by new technologies, which hinders the replacement of components.

The objective of modernization is always continuous improvement, through the optimization of resources, with innovative solutions minimizing adverse social and environmental impacts. Plant rehabilitation works show particular challenges, such as not interrupting the operation of the generating units, or minimizing the downtime of the modernizing generating units, aiming at greater efficiency in energy production.

The modernization strategy takes into account the risks, costs and performance of each renewal option, including analysis of the plant’s historical operation, maintenance data, project data, on-site surveys and energy market analysis.

Intertechne has considerable experience in rehabilitating hydroelectric power plants and is currently responsible for the largest hydroelectric power plants modernization project in the country, at the HPPs of Ilha Solteira (3,444 MW) and Jupiá (1,551 MW), located on the Paraná River.
